Fiorella Gurrieri at the ATP1A3 Symposium in Disease, Chicago 2018

Professor Fiorella Gurrieri tells us about an exciting new project that she is working on.

GurrieriĀ“s research group is doing research with cell lines that have 5 of the ATP1A3 mutations and they find that those cell lines accumulate excessive sodium.
Finding out which drug can interact with this mechanism is the project they are now working on with other groups. They already have compounds from a pharmaceutical company and are starting to screen them.
Then they will try the candidate molecules with mouse models that they get from Duke University. The key is this kind of research is collaboration. Collaboration between researchers, parents and other specialists is the key because everyone brings a unique experience and background to the table.
